Kluwer, part of Wolters Kluwer, is the largest online publisher and information provider in the Netherlands.

Challenge

Kluwer wishes to display their current portfolio of study books on the Kluwer Campus website, which is aimed at students and tutors of higher education and related courses. The design and style of the site should be appealing to the target group. The web shop, developed by Componence, is required to be linked to enable the conversion of the paid services and products. Migration of the existing site is a prerequisite.

Kluwer analyses various solutions for Kluwer Campus, eventually opting for Liferay Portal which meets all Kluwer's demands and wishes, offering comprehensive branding and labelling options, and a uniform and generic functionality. Componence specialises in web portals and e-commerce applications and is selected by Kluwer as the preferred supplier.

Solution

The new portal is built in less than a few months. Close cooperation between the Kluwer professionals and the Liferay experts at Componence ensures effective decision-making on the

implementation design. After each development stage a well executed demo-version gives a clear picture of the progress being made. Liferay Portal incorporates a versatile functionality and has been built for modular system development, making the portal ultimately suitable for this project approach, based on the Rational Unified Process (RUP) methodology.

Kluwer Campus is delivered well ahead of the deadline and within the agreed budget, providing both students and tutors with a complete catalogue of up-to-date book titles per field of study. A keyword search option has been added, as well as the possibility to order through the Componence web shop portlet. In addition, a news-window feature is displaying headlines which are issued by external sources. Kluwer Campus is customised to be relevant to the needs of its target group, while the design ensures low maintenance, exceeding all expectations.

Kluwer is looking to extend Kluwer Campus shortly with a download function, allowing tutors and students to obtain additional complementary study materials, as well as an option to test their
knowledge through a question and answer module.
